TITLE Rievaulx Abbey (SOLD)

David Stead
Oil on canvas
60cms x 50cms

Another painting in the ‘In The Footsteps Of Turner’ series, I suppose I first saw Rievaulx with my father when I was about five years old. Though very beautiful, it has a somewhat darker feel to it than most of the other great Yorkshire abbeys. It has a sense of loss, of mortality and emptiness, like holding a human skull.

Turner did several drawings of the abbey, in 1801 and again in 1816 finally producing two finished watercolours dealing brilliantly with the changing moods, weather and atmosphere of this extraordinary place.
