This view of West Tanfield is purported to be one of the most photographed views in Yorkshire. Just below the bridge the famous 19th century angling writer Francis (Max) Walbran slipped and drowned whilst fishing for grayling having just warned his readers on the dangers of the slippery limestone pavements in this very place. He is buried in the churchyard.
