‘Wind Against Tide, Dunstanburgh’, oil on canvas 80cm x 80cm
This is one of David’s favourite places to visit and to paint. Remote and beautiful, it has remained largely unchanged since Turner’s time and of course it is the sea that dominates the scene, then as now. David has painted the castle from a rocky promontory to the south of the village of Craster over a wildly exuberant sea that all but masks the castle with spray.
Turner imbued his many paintings of Dunstanburgh with the excitement of rough seas too, along with shipwrecks, wreckers and excise men – subjects not so readily available to the modern painter!
