This little painting is of a copse at the end of the lane behind David’s studio near Ripon in North Yorkshire.

David says: I love working on these very ‘simple’ subjects: I think they have the ability to comunicate shared experience to everyone – we’ve all seen/been part of a landscape such as this at some point in our lives – a place where light filters through the trees and whilst it might not seem as memorable or grand as a castle or a sweeping seascape, these are the intimate experiences of our everyday lives. The picture was mostly made by applying paint with fingers and rags and drawn over later with crayon and graphite. I also love working on this handmade paper because there’s an element of unpredictability to the surface and the way paint, be it watercolour or acrylic, takes to it.
