Bootham 2

Second day at Bootham school and after working late in the studio last night I’d slept in! All a bit of a rush to get to York as soon as possible but I’m still ten minutes late; Jonathan, gracious as ever, brushes over it (no detention then!), offers me a coffee and I’m back in front of the canvas.

Today is a day of consolidation – reassess where we have got to, strengthen the good and re-work the bad. There’s a good deal of re-drawing to do and though still dull, the light has changed considerably which means that the work takes several steps backwards before we can move forwards, if indeed there is such a thing. There is such a strong element of exploration in painting that the notion of advance seems wholly inappropriate.
