Framing

Framing can be a difficult issue: to frame or not to frame, and if you do, what size, what colour, should it be gilded? A trusted framer is an invaluable asset to any artist and I have been fortunate to work with the same man for the past fifteen years and he is one of the best framers in the country, the only down side is that he lives and works in Devon.

Anyway, I got a call from him last week to say that the frames I’d ordered were ready for collection. It might seem a long way to go for a picture frame but these are something special…….They are built from 2, 3, or even 4 different white wood mouldings. They are given several coats of gesso and rubbed down between each and then a kind of clay slip or bole is applied. Finally the frame is hand coloured to suit the painting and any gilding is added. The result is, as I say, very special – they are truly bespoke frames and well worth the trip.
